Nexium May Increase the Risk of Bone Fractures
Research has indicted that side effects of some heartburn medications, the proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), including Nexium, may increase the risk of bone fractures. Nexium is manufactured by AstraZeneca.
In May 2010, the FDA required warnings of bone fracture risk to be added to the labels of PPI drugs. In March 2011, the FDA updated the required Nexium warning, indicating the risk appears to be dose-specific, limited to prescription-strength taken over a long time. Other PPI drugs to which the warning of increased risk of fracture are required, are Aciphex, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Vimovo, and Zegerid.
Lawsuits have been brought, claiming fractures resulted from ingestion of Nexium.
