Traffic Deaths in 2011 Fewest Since 1949

Traffic Deaths in 2011 Fewest in Six Decades Statistic

On Monday, the government announced that traffic related accidents which resulted in death continued on its historic decline and fell to its lowest level since 1949 according to a USA Today report. In 2011, a total of 32,367 people died as a result of a traffic related accident. This stat includes pedestrians and those riding bicycles.

The 2011 total is a 1.9% dip from the 2010. Since 2005, there has been a whopping 26% decline.

While these stats are great news, according to preliminary data from 2012, it looks like injuries and motor vehicle deaths are trending upwards. One expert cites the stronger economy for the uptick in 2012.

While the over all numbers in 2011 are improving, two groups increased. Fatalities involving bicycle rides increased 8.7% and motorcycle riders 2.1%.

In the state of North Carolina the decrease from 2010 to 2011 was right at 7% with 1,320 fatalities in 2010 compared to 1,227 in 2011. Only Tennessee had a higher decrease (8.3) within the South.
