According to ABC News, the Obama administration has ordered trans fats to be phased out of our diets over the next three years. It is reported that consumers will not to be able to tell a difference in taste, but that the occurrence of coronary heart disease and fatal heart attacks will be greatly reduced by the time the process is completed. According to the article, although the FDA says that the consumption of trans fats fell 78% between 2003 and 2012, the trans fats that still exist are “a threat to public health.” Common trans fatty culprits include frozen pizza, coffee creamers and vegetable shortenings. Food companies and restaurants have been given three years to fully comply with the new regulations.

Denmark started off the movement against these harmful substances by banning products that contained trans fats, according to the WHO. Austria, Hungary, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland quickly set similar standards for food. Since the ban, the people of Denmark have seen many improvements in general health. Most notably, there has been a significant decrease in the number of deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases. This information inspires hope for general health improvement in the US now that similar regulations are being placed on this product.
