The FDA has expanded its warning concerning Peter Pan and Great Value (the house brand at Wal-Mart) peanut butter recall. Initially, the warning advised consumers to discard peanut butter jars with the product code 2111, but now it has advised consumer to throw out all Peter Pan and Great Value jars that were purchased after May 2006.
Both are suspected with having been contaminated with salmonella by tainted jars from a ConAgra Foods processing plan in Sylvester, Georgia. Symptoms which appear one to four hours after eating the contaminated peanut butter include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramping and fever. Healthy people may think they just have the flu and go on. For older people and children, salmonellosis can be deadly. Recent experience with ECOLI in hamburgers and spinach have demonstrated how deadly food born illnesses are to children. It’s a scary day when a good old peanut butter and jelly sandwiches can be potentially deadly.
If you think you may have been affected by this tainted peanut butter and are considering legal action. You need to hold on to the jar for evidence. While you don’t have to have the jar to prove your use it is valuable evidence in this type of legal proceeding. If you don’t have the jar you can also have a stool sample tested to prove the specific stain of salmonella involved, which is Salmonella Tennessee.
However, we are advising our clients and those consumers who contact us to hold on to the jar if they’ve eaten the peanut butter and become sick. We are also telling people to seek medical attention immediately. Your, next step should be to contact an attorney experienced in personal injury and unsafe products cases to discuss the injuries and damages you’ve sustained.
