Fixodent, a Proctor & Gamble product, is a commonly used over-the-counter denture adhesive.

Zinc Poisoning

Fixodent uses the metallic element zinc in its formula. The FDA has recently advised the makers of denture adhesives that there has been an increase in incidents of zinc poisoning linked to the use of these products. For the safety of consumers, the FDA has recommended that manufacturers add warnings regarding the dangers of zinc to the label or remove the zinc from the product altogether. While some manufacturers have agreed to remove zinc from their denture cream formula, Proctor & Gamble has refused to do so, putting consumers of their product, Fixodent, at risk for zinc poisoning.

Zinc poisoning can manifest in the blood and can cause serious and severe neurological disorders. Some of the symptoms of zinc poisoning may include:

  • Tremors
  • Weakness in the extremities
  • Difficulty walking
  • Blood disorders
