What To Do Right After An Accident?

Having an accident can be a very stressful situation whether you are injured or not. However, there are a few things you can do right after an accident to make the ordeal a little less stressful. First, at the scene get as much information as you can about the other party. Get the driver’s name, address, phone number and license plate number. If there are any witnesses that saw the accident and come to check on you, get the witness’s name, address and phone number. Many times witnesses leave before the police arrive. However, if you have this information you can give it to the police officer and she/he can follow-up with the witness if there is a dispute as to what happened in the accident.

Second carry a disposable camera in your car. You can take pictures of your car,

the other person’s car and the accident scene. Although you should not move your car after the accident, but sometimes safety requires you to move your car off the road before the police arrive. If you must move your car, you can take some quick pictures to show how the accident looked right after it happened.

Thirdly, if you are hurt, let the officer know you are hurt. An officer can call an ambulance for you, if you need it or he can note you are taking yourself to the hospital. If you are hurt you need to seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

Fourthly, report the accident to your insurance company. Your insurance policy requires you to notify them promptly of how, when and where the accident occurred. It is important for your company to review the information and inform you of what coverage may be beneficial to you based on your report. Failure to notify your insurance company could result in a denial of some of those coverages.

These suggestions are just a few simple things you can do to take control after an accident and hopefully alleviate some of the stress in handling the matters involved in your automobile accident.
